Australia's Strategy For Global Abolition Of The Death Penalty 2026

Today, I am proud to announce another milestone: the launch of Australia’s refreshed Strategy for Abolition of the Death Penalty.

I am honoured to be here in Papeete for this 4^th Pacific Human Rights Conference on SOGIESC. It is great to be here with the community and I look forward to the conference ahead.

Human rights are under attack.

Let me begin by thanking our civil society partners who have convened this event in the margins of the 9th World Congress Against the Death Penalty

Ageing asks us to think more carefully about interdependence, care and human dignity. It also asks us to listen carefully to older persons, whose experience must shape how dignity, autonomy and equal worth are understood and protected.

As Australia’s Special Envoy for International Human Rights, I look forward to being part of our collective efforts for the abolition of the death penalty.

We will do all we can to combat antisemitism, Islamophobia, and attacks on all communities, including on our First Nations peoples.
