MEDIA RELEASE
VENICE BIENNALE

I welcome the announcement of the completion of the new Australian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale.

This new building is the only 21st century building in the Biennale Gardens.

Australia is one of only 29 countries to have a national pavilion in Venice.

It is a fine example of modern Australian architecture, designed by Denton Corker Marshall.

It will display the best of Australian contemporary art in the Venice Biennale, the worlds most respected contemporary art forum.

This year our featured artist will be Fiona Hall and her work will include a range of media from sculpture to video art.

The new pavilion has been funded by the Australian Government, initiated by the former Labor Government, together with very significant private donations.

I recognise the work of Mr Simon Mordant AM, Australia's Commissioner to the Biennale, for his own personal support of the project, together with his wife Catriona, and the donations of many other private supporters.

I look forward to visiting the new pavilion later in the year.
