SUPPORT FOR MH17 LEGAL PROCEEDINGS
Labor offers bipartisan support for the initiation of legal proceedings against the Russian Federation in the International Civil Aviation Organisation, over the downing of Malaysian Airlines flight MH17.
The murder of 298 innocent people, including 38 Australians citizens and residents, was a senseless and criminal act.
As Paul Guard, who lost his parents, Jill and Roger, made clear tonight, the families of those killed want the truth, they want Russia to own up to its role, and they want an apology.
We owe it to the victims and their loved ones to do everything possible to deliver the justice and accountability they seek.
This joint action with The Netherlands is an important step forward in this fight.
The downing of MH17 was a clear breach of the Chicago Convention. There must be a heavy cost for such breaches, to ensure Australians can have trust in the safety of international aviation.
The illegal and immoral invasion of Ukraine has shown us the contempt Russia holds for international law. It must be held to account for its shameful actions.
