Police Ministers Council advances National Firearms Register

Australia’s first National Firearms Register is one step close to reality.

At an extraordinary meeting of Police Ministers in Sydney today all jurisdictions advanced work on this critical public safety initiative.

This meeting was called after National Cabinet tasked Police Ministers to work towards a National Firearms Register in the wake of the shocking events in Wieambilla in Queensland.

Police Ministers acknowledged the tragic deaths of Constable Rachel McCrow, Constable Matthew Arnold and Mr Alan Dare.

Once operational, a National Firearms Register will improve both police and community safety. Ministers discussed the key purposes and capabilities of a National Firearms Register. A consultation paper will be released shortly to inform development of a National Firearms Register.

Public consultation is now open and will close on 25 April
