ONE HUNDRED INDIGENOUS STUDENTS VISIT FEDERAL PARLIAMENT FOR WORK EXPERIENCE
Mount Isa student Jerome Pang, 16, joined Mark Dreyfus, Cabinet Secretary and Parliamentary Secretary for Climate Change, this week for work experience in the federal parliament as part of the 2012 Learn Earn Legend! - Work Exposure with Government program.
Jerome is a proud member of Mount Isa's Kalkadoon community and attends Marist College in Brisbane. He is one of a hundred Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students selected to visit Canberra for the week-long program.
"The program gives students a chance to observe up close - and behind the scenes - the roles, responsibilities and career opportunities in Australian political life and in the public service," said Mr Dreyfus.
"These students are potential future leaders in our community and I hope the Learn Earn Legend! program helps guide them on their career paths."
"Jerome and his fellow students have had a taste of parliamentary life this week - observing question time, researching Bills, drafting media releases and attending a formal welcoming ceremony at Government House for the Chilean President."
The Year 11 and 12 students have been selected from both government and non-government schools throughout metropolitan, regional and remote areas of Australia. As participants of the program, they will be introduced to the different pathways available to them to start a career in the APS.
The program is part of the Australian Government's commitment to increase Indigenous employment within the Commonwealth Public Sector to 2.7% by 2015, and to Closing the Gap in employment outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
