MAD MAX TRIUMPHS AT OSCARS WHAT A LOVELY NIGHT

I wish to congratulate the Australians who have triumphed at the Academy Awards today in Los Angeles, in particular the makers of Mad Max: Fury Road which has taken home six awards and completed a near-clean sweep of all technical categories.

Australia's talent in the world of film production is well known within the industry globally, and once again been acknowledged at the Oscars.

Mad Max: Fury Road was a true triumph of Australian artistic skill and ability. With its six awards it has now broken the record for number of awards at the Oscars for any Australian film, and has taken home the most awards of any film at today's ceremony against incredible competition.

Under visionary director George Miller, Mad Max: Fury Road breathed new life into a great Australian franchise. The film broke all rules about sequels and set a new, thrilling standard for all other action movies that follow.

Filmed with a predominantly Australian crew and significant Australian cast, it was a film that took the viewers breath away. And there was a lot of hard work and raw creativity behind the scenes to make that visual impact so powerful, as today's awards show.

Congratulations to:

  • Jenny Beavan, who takes home her second Academy Award for Best Costume Design;

  • Colin Gibson and Lisa Thompson for Best Production Design;

  • Lesley Vanderwalt, Damien Martin and Elka Wardega for Best Makeup and Hairstyling;

  • Gregg Rudloff, Chris Jenkins and Ben Osmo for Best Sound Mixing;

  • David White and Mark Mangini for Best Sound Editing; and

  • Margaret Sixel for Best Film Editing.

My congratulations also go to other Australians nominated for these prestigious awards today.

This is truly a remarkable achievement and Australians should be proud of this recognition as a filmmaking nation on the world stage.
