LABOR WELCOMES AUSTRALIAN REPUBLIC MOVEMENT PROPOSAL FOR AN AUSTRALIAN HEAD OF STATE

Labor congratulates the Australian Republic Movement (ARM) on the release of its proposed model for an Australian Head of State.

Whilst constitutional recognition and a Voice to Parliament for First Nations people remain Labor’s constitutional reform priority, it is important that all Australians have the opportunity to consider an Australian Head of State in the future and the best model of appointment.

Labor believes Australia needs our own Head of State who reflects our maturity, independence, and unique identity.

The Australian Head of State should be one of us - an Australian who lives with the Australian people.

Whilst dealing with the COVID crisis is Australia’s immediate concern, it is important that we plan for a better future and how Australia grows as a nation.

The ARM proposal provides an important opportunity for Australians to consider how we can build a better system of government in the future.
