LABOR CONGRATULATES HELEN GARNER ON WINDHAM-CAMPBELL PRIZE

Labor warmly congratulates Helen Garner on being recognised in the 2016 Windham-Campbell Literature Prizes.

Helen Garner is a celebrated novelist and one of Australia's most respected writers, but was selected for her achievement in nonfiction writing.

Her most recent nonfiction work, This House of Grief, demonstrates a depth of research and quality of reportage typical of her work.

As the citation remarks, Helen Garner brings acute observations and narrative skill to bear on the conflicts and tragedies of contemporary Australian life.

The mission of the prizes is to call attention to literary achievement and provide writers with the opportunity to focus on their work independent of financial concerns.

This international validation highlights the excellence and relevance of Australian arts and humanities scholarship.
