Greens Party again delays vital whistleblower reforms

The Greens Party has again deliberately delayed vital whistleblower reforms, ensuring they cannot now become law for at least another month.

The Government’s Public Interest Disclosure reforms have the support of all parties and should have been passed through both Houses this week.

However, the Bill is stranded in the Senate as a result of days of filibustering by the Greens.

On 27 March Greens Senator David Shoebridge declared there was an “urgent need for whistleblower reforms to protect those brave public servants who speak out about corruption and wrongdoing.”

Let’s be clear – the only reason whistleblower protections are not already law is because of the Greens.

In December the Greens voted in the Senate to delay debate on the Public Interest Disclosure Bill for at least a month. Now they have spent Budget week doing everything they can to again prevent these vital reforms becoming law.

The Albanese Government’s Bill implements recommendations of the 2016 Moss Review, which the former Coalition Government refused to act on.

Unlike the Greens, Labor is here to deliver reform, not delay it.
