EXTRA MONEY FOR EARLY INTERVENTION TO SUPPORT INDIGENOUS YOUTH IN THE TOP END
The Australian Government will inject an extra $338 000 into the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency to provide early intervention services to Indigenous youth in the Top End.
This funding will help provide services to young people, including those in remote communities for the next 18 months, said Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus QC.
The funding will support early intervention services and case management to Indigenous youth entering the criminal justice system and aim to ensure the first time they enter the criminal justice system is also the last time.
During a visit to Darwin, Mr Dreyfus congratulated the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency on its fortieth anniversary.
After forty years of dedication and effort, the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency continues to deliver high quality and culturally appropriate Indigenous legal and justice services to the Top End of the Northern Territory, said Mr Dreyfus.
These services include:
- a legal assistance service with a solid record of high quality service delivery to Indigenous Australians in the Northern Territory
- an Indigenous Through Care and Prisoner Support service that won a 2012 Australian Crime and Violence Prevention Award
- intensive and culturally appropriate training and support for Night Patrol Services in the Northern Territory
- Stronger Futures Legal Services and Welfare Rights Outreach (formerly the Northern Territory Emergency Response Legal Services and NTER Welfare Rights Outreach).
