MEDIA RELEASE
DISASTER ASSISTANCE FOR NORTHERN TERRITORY COMMUNITIES

Attorney-General and Minister for Emergency Management Mark Dreyfus QC and Northern Territory Chief Minister and Minister for Police, Fire and Emergency Services Adam Giles have announced assistance to local government areas affected by the flooding associated with the monsoonal trough that occurred in the Top End from February to April 2013.

To help communities back on their feet as soon as possible, relief and recovery assistance will be provided under the jointly funded Commonwealth and Northern Territory Government Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA).

Natural disaster recovery assistance will be made available in the Local Government Areas of East Arnhem, Katherine, Roper Gulf, Victoria-Daly and West Arnhem.

This flooding has severely affected many communities and this assistance will help people recover from the floods and get back on their feet, Mr Dreyfus said.

As a result of these floods, some people had to be evacuated from their homes and other communities were isolated for several days. This joint funding will help local communities to return to life as normal, Mr Giles said.

Funding under the NDRRA will also be directed to the restoration of essential public assets such as roads and bridges, allowing residents to move freely throughout the Top End once again.

This funding will help with the rebuilding and re-opening of roads damaged by the floods, Mr Giles said.

This is a good example of the Commonwealth and Northern Territory Government working together for the benefit of communities in need, Mr Dreyfus said.
