MARK DREYFUS
SHADOW ATTORNEY-GENERAL
SHADOW MINISTER FOR CONSTITUTIONAL REFORM
MEMBER FOR ISAACS

DAVID IPP QC

Labor is deeply saddened at the passing of David Ipp QC.

David Ipp was a towering figure in Australia’s legal profession, and Australia is much the poorer for his passing.

He was a passionate advocate for equality before the law, one of the finest legal minds of his generation, made important contributions to law reform and was a powerful figure in the fight against corruption in politics.

An immigrant from South Africa, Mr Ipp loved his adopted country. His ability and passion were recognised by his appointment as a judge of the Supreme Court of Western Australia just eight years after his arrival, the fastest judicial appointment in the state’s history.

He later served on the NSW Court of Appeal, before being appointed NSW ICAC Commissioner by the Rees Government in 2009 where he brilliantly demonstrated the value of such commissions in exposing corruption and holding politicians and public officials accountable for their actions.

Over the last several years, Mr Ipp has continued to contribute to the public debate on matters of national importance, including as a forceful and persuasive advocate for the establishment of a federal anti-corruption commission.

Labor offers its deepest sympathies to Mr Ipp’s wife, Erina, his family, friends and colleagues, and the many others who are mourning his passing.
