Attorney-General visits Somali Youth Outreach Project

Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus QC visited the Horn of Africa Relief and Development Agency of Australia Inc. (HARDA) in Auburn today with the Member for Reid, John Murphy MP, to meet participants in the Somali Youth Outreach Program.

HARDA works with "at risk" youth to build their skills to contribute positively to Australian society and challenge the ideologies of violent extremists.

"I am very pleased to see HARDA continuing to deliver initiatives that assist individuals to build positive relationships and develop skills that will help them thrive in Australia," Mr Dreyfus said.

"The Somali Youth Outreach Project provides at-risk youth with mentoring and sporting opportunities that provide a powerful, positive influence," Mr Murphy said.

The Horn of Africa Relief and Development Agency is one of many grassroots organisations funded under the Building Community Resilience grants program.

Its Somali Youth Outreach Program provides an intensive residential mentoring program comprising forums and workshops for young people aged between 16 and 26 of Somali and other culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

"Since 2010 the Building Community Resilience grants program has invested over $4.1 million in 50 diverse projects that are strengthening the resilience of local communities to reject the negative influence of violent extremism," Mr Dreyfus said.

A further round of grants will be launched in June this year.
