MENTONE RESIDENTS FEELING EDGY ABOUT MENTONE HOTEL DEVELOPMENT

Member for Isaacs, Mark Dreyfus has encouraged local residents to make a submission to the City of Kingston on the proposed development of the Mentone Hotel.

The Edgy is an icon of the Mentone and Bayside communities. It is one of Melbournes last remaining historic pubs and this should be preserved wherever possible, Mr Dreyfus said.

The proposal to amend the existing planning scheme to allow a four-storey development on the site of the Mentone Hotel is understandably troubling to many local residents. I am concerned that if this amendment is granted that it would set a dangerous precedent for the overdevelopment of other properties along Beach Road.

I strongly encourage our Bayside community to share its concerns about this development by making a submission to the City of Kingston, Mr Dreyfus said.

The proposed development of the Mentone Hotel site would see the construction of:

  • a food/beverage area within part of the ground floor of the heritage-protected building;

  • 11 apartments within the existing heritage-protected building;

  • construction of a four-storey building in the current carpark area behind the hotel to include 45 apartments and 12 two/three storey townhouses; and

  • basement car parking (and alteration to existing access points).

Information about this proposed development and details about how to make a submission can be found at: http://www.kingston.vic.gov.au/Property-Development/Planning-Scheme-Amendments/Current-Amendments/Amendment-C148-Mentone-Hotel
