MENTONE HOTEL PROPOSAL GETS WHAT IT DESERVES

Member for Isaacs, Mark Dreyfus has thanked City of Kingston councillors who voted to abandon Planning Scheme Amendment C148 which could have allowed the development of the Mentone Hotel the Edgy to a four-storey height limit.

The proposal to amend the height limit of the Mentone Hotel to four-storeys never passed the community interest test and I am pleased to see that City of Kingston councillors have voted to abandon this amendment, Mr Dreyfus said.

The City of Kingston has a longstanding planning scheme that limits developments along Beach Road to two-storeys. This proposal to allow a four-storey development that could have included 11 apartments within the existing hotel and 45 apartments and 12 townhouses in the current carpark area was simply not in line with community expectations.

I encourage the proponent to consider a new development application that is compliant with the existing two-storey limit and provides adequate space for a hotel, caf, restaurant or bar in the tradition of the Edgy.

I would particularly like to thank Mayor David Eden, Cr Rosemary West and Cr Georgina Oxley whose support for the Edgy has been staunch and unwavering.

The Edgy has a future in Mentone. Its important that we get it right, Mr Dreyfus said.
