Mark Dreyfus QC MP announces Bayside Medicare Local will drive primary health care reform - Mark Dreyfus QC MP

Mark Dreyfus QC MP, Federal Member for Isaacs, today announced that residents in Kingston will receive better coordinated and integrated primary health care services through the establishment of the Bayside Medicare Local from 1 January next year.

Mark Dreyfus QC MP, Federal Member for Isaacs, today announced that residents in Kingston will receive better coordinated and integrated primary health care services through the establishment of the Bayside Medicare Local from 1 January next year.

Bayside Medicare Local is part of a network of 62 Medicare Locals throughout Australia, which will be established to enable the provision of tailored primary health care to their local communities.

Mr Dreyfus said Bayside Medicare Local will benefit families in the Mordialloc Chelsea region.

"We want to keep local residents well and out-of-hospital. That's why the Federal Labor Government will establish the Bayside Medicare Local to improve frontline health services in the local community," Mr Dreyfus said.

"Bayside Medicare Local will lead to better primary health care for families, while assisting doctors to coordinate the care of their patients with nurses, physiotherapists, dieticians, other allied health professionals, community health centres and hospitals," Mr Dreyfus said.

"In addition to identifying gaps in local health services, Bayside Medicare Local will help patients to navigate the health system to find the right services at the right time and place, better connecting and improving local services," Mr Dreyfus said.

Dr Chris Olszewski, Chairman of Southcity GP Services, said the philosophy behind Bayside Medicare Local is to bring together general practice and other primary health care services so that patients can access them seamlessly, appropriately and in a timely manner. We believe the setup of this organisation will, therefore, mark a new era in health care in the south of Melbourne.

Chris Fox, CEO of Central Bayside Community Health Services, said "The Bayside Medicare Local will prepare a population health plan for the bayside area and assist GP's to arrange multi-disciplinary care for their patients. It will also assist GP's to establish additional out of hours GP services in the bayside area."

"This is an exciting opportunity for our area and I look forward to working closely with Bayside Medicare Local and local primary health care providers to ensure a vibrant, responsive primary health care system," Mr Dreyfus said.

Southcity GP Services, Bayside GP Network and Monash Division of General Practice will work in partnership with 10 other organisations to establish the Bayside Medicare Local. The boundaries of each Medicare Local can be viewed at www.yourhealth.gov.au
