More than 1200 new parents in Isaacs have applied for Paid Parental Leave since the Gillard Labor Government introduced the historic scheme over a year ago.

Mark Dreyfus QC MP, Federal Member for Isaacs, said the Paid Parental Leave scheme was a vital reform that was helping local mums and dads.

"For many low paid, casual and part time workers in Isaacs, this is the first time they have had this support when a new baby is born," Mr Dreyfus said.

"The Labor Government's scheme is helping local working women take more time off to spend with their new babies in those critical early months.

The Government's historic Paid Parental Leave scheme provides eligible working parents with up to 18 weeks parental leave pay at the national minimum wage (currently about $590 a week before tax).

"It is a win for local families by giving new parents more options to balance work and family life, and it's a win for local businesses by allowing them to retain skilled staff."

From 2013, the Gillard Labor Government will extend Paid Parental Leave to provide extra support to new parents with two weeks Dad and Partner Pay.

"Under this Labor Government, Australia has caught up with the rest of the world to deliver Paid Parental Leave to local families."
