DREYFUS SECURES WIN FOR CSIRO RESEARCH CENTRE IN ASPENDALE

Member for Isaacs, Mark Dreyfus has secured a win for the CSIRO Research Centre in Aspendale, with the Turnbull Government yielding to community pressure and agreeing to keep the centre open until at least 2023.

This is a huge win for Aspendale residents, for Australian science and for local jobs, Mr Dreyfus said.

Earlier this year the Aspendale Research Centre was under threat of closure due to this governments cuts to the CSIRO, which has seen over 30 local researchers told that they are to be made redundant.

I have written to Prime Minister Turnbull and to Greg Hunt on this matter, calling on them to reverse the governments cuts to the CSIRO, restore the jobs cut at the Aspendale Research Centre, and guarantee that they wont sell off the Aspendale Research Centre for property development.

While the governments cuts to the CSIRO and to local research jobs remain, I am pleased that local community pressure has forced the government to commit to keeping the CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research Centre open until at least 2023.

This fight isnt over yet. I will continue to fight for local jobs and push the Turnbull Government to restore funding to the CSIRO and end the sackings of local scientists and researchers, Mr Dreyfus said.
