Mark Dreyfus QC MP, Federal Member for Isaacs, is encouraging young people and other residents of Carrum Downs and Frankston to celebrate International Youth Day on Friday August 12.

Mr. Dreyfus said that International Youth Day recognises young people in Isaacs and across Australia for the valuable contribution they make.

"International Youth Day is organised by the United Nations to recognise the efforts of the world's youth in improving global society, while also helping young people to address the challenges they face and to join together to celebrate their achievements.

"It's also a great opportunity for us to nominate young people for the 2012 Young Australian of the Year Award, which recognises and celebrates the outstanding achievements of young people across the country.

"I would encourage all Carrum Downs and Frankston residents to nominate our local young people, those who through their own commitment and passion are reaching their goals and doing great things for themselves and their community."

Nominees for Young Australian of the Year need to be Australian citizens aged 16 to 30. Previous winners of the award include solo sailor Jessica Watson, Trooper Mark Donaldson VC, and filmmaker Khao Do.

Visit the Australian of the Year Awards website www.australianoftheyear.org and submit a nomination for the Young Australian of the Year. Nominations Close 31 August 2011.

The theme for this year's International Youth Day is Youth should be given a chance to take an active part in the decision-making of local, national and global levels.
