$1.2 Million To Improve Road Safety In Isaacs

27 August 2024

THE HON MARK DREYFUS KC MP
ATTORNEY-GENERAL
CABINET SECRETARY
MEMBER FOR ISAACS

SENATOR THE HON CAROL BROWN
ASSISTANT MINISTER FOR INFRASTRUCTURE AND TRANSPORT

$1.2 MILLION TO IMPROVE ROAD SAFETY IN ISAACS

Victorians travelling through Dingley Village will have a safer trip thanks to a $1.2 million commitment from the Albanese Labor Government.

The funding is part of the $33.3 million Victorian Black Spots program delivered in 2024-25 to improve 56 known crash sites across the state.

The Black Spot Program funds a range of safety measures at locations where serious crashes have occurred or are at risk of occurring.

The Black Spot Program will fund safety improvements for the turn into Rowan Road from Westall Road, including installing traffic signals to control right-turn movements into Rowan Road. This project will help to reduce serious injuries and deaths for all road users in Dingley Village and the surrounding suburbs.

The Albanese Labor Government has substantially increased Black Spot Program funding, which is progressively rising from $110 million to $150 million per year.

The Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics has found that Black Spot projects reduce the number of crashes which cause death and injury by 30 per cent on average.

At the 56 sites that have received funding through the Black Spots program, there were 300 crashes in the five years to 2021. This shows a clear need for the safety improvements that we’re announcing today.

This is part of the Government’s efforts to reduce the national road toll, which includes doubling Roads to Recovery funding from $500 million to $1 billion a year and delivering a nationally harmonised set of high-quality and timely data to inform road safety decision making.

Quotes attributable to Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Carol Brown:

“I am pleased to announce this latest round of Black Spot projects in Victoria, which will improve roads across the state.

“Every death on Victorian roads is a tragedy and could have been avoided.”

“Local communities know where their most dangerous road locations are and their ability to nominate projects under this program and work with state and local experts in reviewing nominations is why this program is so successful.”

“With the recent announcement of our increased commitment to this long-running program, I strongly encourage individuals, organisations, and local governments to nominate sites in their local communities for consideration in the next round of funding.”

Quotes attributable to Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus:

“I am so pleased to announce this funding which will benefit Dingley Village and the entire Isaacs community. I thank the locals who raised this dangerous black spot with me on numerous occasions and I look forward to this important project getting underway.

“We know the Black Spots program reduces crashes and saves lives. I encourage anyone with a dangerous black spot near them to submit a nomination for future funding.

“Road safety is a shared responsibility, and this is a timely reminder to be extra vigilant and slow down to ensure that everyone can get home safely from every journey.”
