REPORT SHOWS WE MUST TACKLE ISLAMOPHOBIA IN AUSTRALIA
New research has revealed the appalling level of hate crimes experienced by Australian Muslims.
The third Islamophobia in Australia report released today by Charles Sturt University cites 247 incidents in 2018 and 2019.
Sadly, these cases are the tip of the iceberg as, Islamophobia, like other hate crimes, is consistently underreported.
The report showed that Muslim women are overwhelming the victim of these hate crimes.
Perpetrators were predominantly male (74%), and victims were predominantly women (82%). Of the 103 victims reported to the Register, 85% were women wearing the hijab.
Hatred towards any Australians on the base of their race, or religion, must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.
Labor is committed to ending religious vilification and discrimination, reflected in our amendments to include anti-vilification provisions in the Religious Discrimination Bill. Sadly, these amendments were rejected by the Morrison Government.
For more than a year, Labor and a coalition of peak multicultural groups have been calling on the Morrison Government to commit to a comprehensive national anti-racism strategy, one aimed at empowering communities and changing attitudes.
It’s time for all Australians to stand together in hope and reject hate.
