MEDIA RELEASE
LEGAL SERVICES, ADOPTION AND FIREARMS EXPERTS SACKED BY ABBOTT GOVERNMENT

Reports today that the Government will abolish the International Legal Services Advisory Council and the National Inter-country Adoption Advisory Group are disturbing, Mr Dreyfus said.

The Abbott Government needs to guarantee the continuation of the good work being done by these bodies by other means.

If they refuse to give this guarantee it will be clear Mr Abbott is only interested in cutting the services that Australians rely on.

Since its creation in 1990 International Legal Services Advisory Council has played a key role in building the reputation of Australia's legal services in Asia.

The National Inter-country Adoption Advisory Group was established to link the Government with the Australia inter-country adoption community.

Each State and Territory is represented on the NIAAG and each representative provides an important perspective on inter-country adoption policy, Mr Dreyfus said.

The members of the Commonwealth Firearms Advisory Council provide valuable advice to the Government on firearms issues, and also connect government policy with the firearms community, Mr Feeney said.

At a time when State Governments are dealing with issues around organised crime, Mr Abbott needs to assure Australians that abolishing the Commonwealth Firearms Advisory Council wont make a tough job even harder.
