LABOR WELCOMES ALRC REPORT INTO COPYRIGHT AND THE DIGITAL ECONOMY

Shadow Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus QC has welcomed the public release of the Australian Law Reform Commission's (ALRC) Report on Copyright and the Digital Economy.

"I look forward to the Government responding to the recommendations of this significant report," Mr Dreyfus said.

"Having received the report in November, the Government should signal their plans as soon as possible, to give the certainty and direction industry needs.

"The report makes the recommendation that an exception for fair use should be included in the Copyright Act.

"The extensive recommendations include an express statement that fair use does not infringe copyright and the inclusion of fairness factors' and illustrative purposes'.

"Other recommendations included clarification of the statutory licensing scheme and changes to broadcasting exemptions.

"I congratulate the ALRC for the delivery of this report, particularly President Rosalind Croucher and Commissioner Jill McKeough.

"The ALRC has a strong history of driving legal reform in Australia.

"I welcome this addition to the discussion of how copyright can adapt to the changing digital economy."
