COMMENCEMENT OF THE NATIONAL REDRESS SCHEME FOR SURVIVORS OF INSTITUTIONAL CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE

Today marks the official commencement of the National Redress Scheme for people who have experienced institutional child sexual abuse.

Finally, around 60,000 survivors of institutional child sexual abuse will have access to the redress they have long deserved.

This could not have been achieved without the perseverance of survivors and advocates.

It has been a long and difficult journey for survivors. No amount of compensation can restore innocence or a childhood.

The Gillard Government established the Royal Commission into Institutional Child Sexual Abuse in 2013 - and Labor will keep standing up for survivors.

There are no more excuses for those institutions that have not yet signed on to the Redress Scheme - they must get on board now.

Further delays will only leave survivors waiting.

Governments and institutions must deliver the Redress Scheme with urgency and compassion, and make sure children are safe in the future.

It's important that people have access to legal advice about the best options for their personal situation - and the Government must make sure all the details people need to make decisions about accessing the Scheme are made publicly available with urgency.

More information about the Redress Scheme and is available by calling 1800 146 713 or visiting the Department of Social Services website.
