MEDIA RELEASE
BUILDING COMMUNITY RESILIENCE GRANTS CLOSE SOON

Not-for-profit organisations, including community groups and local councils, are reminded that applications close on Friday for Federal Government grants for countering violent extremism.

The Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus QC encourages eligible organisations to apply for the Building Community Resilience grants.

"These grants are a great opportunity for locally engaged community organisations to build resistance to violent extremist influences and beliefs," Mr Dreyfus said.

The 2013-14 funding round aims to develop and expand on existing work being done in Australian communities.

Since 2010, three rounds have been funded under the program. Fifty projects have been funded and a total of $4.1 million allocated.

The program has funded a wide variety of activities across Australia, including training and mentoring of young leaders, improving media skills, and educating and informing communities about countering violent extremism.

"The focus of this funding round is on education and skill development activities which build community resilience and which use the internet to boost the accessibility and interactivity of projects for young people across Australia," Mr Dreyfus said.

"I hope we will see a strong response from Australian communities, which we know are already committed to challenging extremist narratives and supporting individuals within their community to resist recruitment and radicalisation."

Applications for the 2013-14 Building Community Resilience grants round close this Friday, 28 June 2013.

More information on the Building Community Resilience grants program, including application forms and guidelines, can be found on the Attorney-General's Department website.
