Parliamentary Secretary for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency Mark Dreyfus today visited Australian Rollforming Manufacturers Pty Ltd (ARM) for talks about the Government's carbon price package.
ARM was established in 2001 and is a growing Australian business that provides design, engineering, fabrication and project management services in addition to its rollforming business.
Speaking to managers and workers, Mr Dreyfus said "Under the Government's plan price carbon, manufacturers such as ARM will continue to have a strong future."
"Modelling undertaken by the Treasury shows that with a carbon price, Australia's manufacturing sector will grow its output by 69 per cent by 2050 compared to today's levels."
"The Government's plan will provide incentives for all businesses to reduce their emissions, and support firms to transition and invest in the clean energy technologies of the future. The Government's Jobs and Competitiveness Program will provide $9.2 billion of assistance over the first three years of the carbon pricing mechanism to safeguard jobs in industries which face international competition and produce a lot of pollution. The vast majority of this assistance will be provided to firms conducting operations in the manufacturing sector.
For less emissions intensive industries, but still trade exposed, such as steel fabrication industries, the Government will establish the Clean Technology Program.
The Clean Technology Program, worth $1.2 billion in total, will help Australian manufacturing businesses identify and implement the technologies that will improve their energy efficiency and reduce their exposure to changing electricity prices.
Within the Clean Technology Program, the Government will also provide a dedicated stream of assistance of $50 million over 6 years to help these industries invest in energy efficient equipment and low-emissions technologies, products and processes.
This dedicated stream of assistance recognises that Australia's metal forging and foundry industries are highly trade exposed and have somewhat higher exposure to electricity costs than general manufacturing businesses.
