Abbott's Budget Cuts Leave Isaacs Schools $189 Million Worse Off - Mark Dreyfus QC MP

New analysis of the Governments own figures, released recently, show Tony Abbotts cuts to education will leave schools in the electorate of Isaacs $189 million worse off over the next decade.

New analysis of the Governments own figures, released recently, show Tony Abbotts cuts to education will leave schools in the electorate of Isaacs $189 million worse off over the next decade.

The Abbott Governments recent Budget cut $80 billion from schools and hospitals with $30 billion of that coming directly from classrooms. This is equivalent to sacking one in seven teachers, and will leave the average school $3.2 million worse off, with every student receiving $1,000 less support per year.

Students will miss out on the individual support they need, including literacy and numeracy programs, sport, music and extra teachers.

These cuts are bad for students and families in Melbournes South East, Member for Isaacs Mark Dreyfus said.

Never before has an Australian Government done so much to hurt local schools and local students.

I find it particularly shocking that Denis Napthine has failed to stand up for Victoria on this issue. Mr Napthine has gone missing in action on education, Mr Dreyfus said.

The cuts announced in the Budget mean there is no funding for the vital fifth and sixth years of the Gonski reforms and restrict indexation to CPI from 2018. With the ABS Education Price Index currently at 5.1 per cent, that will mean a significant and compounding cut in real terms.
