TURNBULL'S REDRESS MESS MUST BE FIXED
The Turnbull Government's plan for a National Redress Scheme for survivors of institutional child sexual abuse has been thrown into doubt.
According to reports the Western Australian and Victorian Governments are desperately seeking further information on the proposed scheme from the Turnbull Government.
Western Australian Premier, Colin Barnett said he has had no consultation with the Commonwealth Government on redress at all.
The Turnbull Government must immediately secure the agreement of the State and Territory Governments and institutions, to make this a truly national redress scheme.
The Turnbull Government must get this right. Survivors of child sexual abuse have been waiting so long for redress. They deserve a fair and nationally consistent redress scheme.
When Christian Porter announced the proposed scheme earlier this month he admitted that not a single state, territory or institution had agreed to the scheme.
Until these negotiations are finalised, and survivors have certainty that they will get what they deserve, Labor will continue to pressure the Turnbull Government to get this right.
Labor understands that no amount of money can make up for the pain and trauma experienced by survivors.
But Labor believes that redress is an important step along the road to healing for survivors of child sexual abuse.
