FINAL HEARING OF ROYAL COMMISSION INTO INSTITUTIONAL RESPONSES TO CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE
The final public hearing of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse is being held in Sydney today to pay tribute to the thousands of courageous survivors that came forward to give evidence of their suffering to the Royal Commission.
The stories have been harrowing, the injustice has been shameful.
The Royal Commission will deliver a Message to Australia book to the National Library. The book gives those who told their story to the Royal Commission an opportunity to share a message about their experience and hopes for creating a safer future for Australian children.
Labor acknowledges the enormous strength and courage of the men and women who came forward to give evidence to the Commission. We are committed to ensuring these brave men and women receive proper redress.
Labor thanks the Commissioners, Justice Peter McClellan, Justice Jennifer Coate, Commissioners Bob Atkinson, Robert Fitzgerald, Helen Milroy, Andrew Murray, Gail Furness and their staff for their hard work and dedication.
After five years and 8,000 private hearings the Royal Commission has shone a light on the scale and scope of institutional Child sexual abuse in Australia.
Child sexual abuse is the most evil of crimes.
The task now for Australia is to do whatever is required to ensure that children are protected from abuse and that every child can enjoy a safe and happy childhood.
