RELEASE OF REDACTED SECTIONS OF THE FINAL REPORT OF THE ROYAL COMMISSION INTO INSTITUTIONAL RESPONSES TO CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE

Labor welcomes today's release of previously redacted sections of the final report of The Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, that relate to Cardinal George Pell.

First and foremost, my colleagues and I are thinking about the many, many survivors of child sexual abuse and the pain they are feeling at this difficult time as these events are revisited.

For too long survivors of child sexual abuse have been silenced, and we welcome the fact that the evidence of these witnesses can now be made public.

The Royal Commission established by Labor has resulted in hundreds of prosecutions and many perpetrators of child sexual abuse have been punished as a direct result of referrals made by the Commission.

But we still have a very long way to go as a community to prevent child sexual abuse, support survivors and, importantly, reduce the stigma of child sexual abuse.
