PM AND PREMIERS MUST ACT ON REDRESS AT COAG
Malcolm Turnbull and the State Premiers must act to establish a National Redress Scheme for survivors of institutional child sexual abuse at today's COAG meeting in Canberra.
When Christian Porter announced the proposed scheme in early November he admitted that not a single state, territory or institution had agreed to a single national redress scheme.
Its imperative that the Turnbull Government secure the agreement of the State and Territory Governments and institutions, to make this a truly national redress scheme.
Recently the Western Australian Premier, Colin Barnett said he has had no consultation with the Commonwealth Government on redress at all.
The Turnbull Government needs to get this right. Survivors of child sexual abuse have been waiting so long for redress. They deserve a fair and nationally consistent redress scheme.
Labor understands that no amount of money can make up for the pain and trauma experienced by survivors.
Labor believes that redress is an important step along the road to healing for survivors of child sexual abuse.
Federal Labor announced a comprehensive plan to establish a national redress scheme for survivors of institutional child sexual abuse in October 2015.
Its time for Mr Turnbull and the State and Territory Governments to act to establish a single national redress scheme.
