THE HON MARK DREYFUS QC MP
SHADOW ATTORNEY-GENERAL
SHADOW MINISTER FOR NATIONAL SECURITY
MEMBER FOR ISAACS
OWN UP TO YOUR CUTS, GEORGE
George Brandis has been Attorney-General for nearly four, long years.
On Q&A last night, he tried to blame funding cuts due to happen in four months on Labor.
Seriously.
This is an Attorney-General who has so deserted his duties as minister in charge of our country's legal system that he cannot bring himself to even acknowledge the $30 million in cuts to frontline legal services that are about to occur on his watch.
That is $30 million in cuts to frontline domestic violence services, tenancy and debt advice services, and employment advice services.
In government, Labor recognised the vital place of these services to help the most vulnerable Australians and gave them a funding injection which is now being withdrawn by George Brandis.
This will result in several centres having to close their doors, turn away over one hundred thousand people who need their help, and fire hard-working lawyers.
That is on top of devastating cuts already being inflicted on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Services and Legal Aid.
This Attorney-General has presided over immense damage to the legal services system in Australia. That is on him, and no-one else.
Labor will continue to hold this terrible Attorney-General to account, and will continue to campaign against these devastating cuts.
