LABOR WELCOMES NEW HIGH COURT APPOINTMENTS
Labor extends its warm congratulations to Susan Kiefel AC on her elevation to Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia, and the Hon James Edelman on his appointment as a judge of the High Court today.
Susan Kiefel's appointment as Australia's first female chief justice is a momentous one. She provides an example for all women and girls to be inspired by.
James Edelman's appointment as a High Court judge at the age of 43 is also a tremendous achievement. His record of success in the educational and legal arenas at such a young age make him wholly deserving of this appointment.
The High Court is one of Australia's most valuable institutions. It protects and defends our constitution and ensures the rule of law is upheld in Australia. It is beyond politics, it keeps our democracy functioning, and for that all Australians should be grateful.
It is in safe hands with Chief Justice Kiefel at its head. We wish her and Justice Edelman well in the years to come.
