LABOR CONGRATULATES PALASZCZUK GOVERNMENT ON FAMILY VIOLENCE LAW REFORM
Federal Labor has welcomed the Palaszczuk Government's decision to make non-fatal strangulation an offence, as part of Queensland's response to family and domestic violence.
According to the Not Now, Not Ever report on family violence, strangulation is a predictive risk factor for more severe domestic and family violence including homicide, Mark Dreyfus QC said.
The report recommended the government consider making strangulation an offence in its own right.
Federal Labor congratulates the Palaszczuk government for taking action on that recommendation, he said.
Queensland becomes the second jurisdiction to act to create this specific offence, after New South Wales did so last year, Terri Butler said.
Strangulation is a red flag for that the victim is at serious risk. That means making it an offence in its own right is intended to lead to better risk assessment and better protection for those who are victims.
I too congratulate Queensland for taking this action. I encourage other jurisdictions to consider introducing similar offences, she said.
