THE HON MARK DREYFUS QC MP
SHADOW ATTORNEY-GENERAL
SHADOW MINISTER FOR NATIONAL SECURITY
MEMBER FOR ISAACS

SENATOR MURRAY WATT

SENATOR FOR QUEENSLAND

INQUIRY INTO THE WA KICKBACK SCANDAL

This afternoon the Senate voted to establish an inquiry into the Attorney-Generals gross mishandling of the Bell Group litigation in the High Court of Australia.

Given the Attorney-Generals refusal to answer critical questions, it is clear a full inquiry is needed to establish the facts.

Senator Brandis has said nothing in the past few days to answer this key question did he direct the Solicitor-General not to run his winning argument in the High Court, which stopped the West Australian government dudding the Commonwealth taxpayer for $300 million?

There is a reason why Senator Brandis is failing to disclose the facts of this matter. It is because he is up to his neck in this scandal, as are several other senior members of this government. He will not be able to get away with blaming this mess on Joe Hockey, who is no longer in Parliament to defend himself.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull may not care to find out the truth about a dirty deal which could have denied the Commonwealth $300 million which it was owed. Labor does.

If Senator Brandis is still in Parliament by the end of this week, Labor expects him to voluntarily appear in front of this Committee, as he chose to in the inquiry concerning the Solicitor-General.
