MEDIA RELEASE
HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION CUT FURTHER
The Abbott Government has delivered a further blow to the Australian Human Rights Commission in their mini-Budget.
$5 million will be cut from the Human Rights Commission, representing a cut of almost 10 per cent of the Human Rights Commissions budget.
This cut to the Human Rights Commission comes on top of a $1.7 million cut in the Budget and the removal of a full-time Disability Discrimination Commissioner.
The President of the Human Rights Commission, Gillian Triggs, has said the cut will directly impact the Commissions ability to perform its role.
The work of the Human Rights Commission is too important to have their already small staff cut and their capacity to carry out core functions reduced.
The Abbott Government cannot continue to undermine the independence of the Australian Human Rights Commission with further budget cuts.
