Helping Australians navigate surrogacy
The Albanese Government has launched a new national hub, the Surrogacy in Australia website, to provide information about the often difficult process of surrogacy.
Surrogacy provides Australians who are unable to give birth an opportunity to have a child. However, surrogacy arrangements can be medically, emotionally, financially and legally complex.
The Surrogacy in Australia website provides intending parents with the information they need to navigate the legal issues and human rights considerations associated with surrogacy arrangements in Australia.
The website makes clear that commercial surrogacy is illegal in all states and territories and warns that in many other countries, surrogacy is unregulated or poorly regulated.
Australian surrogacy law protects the human rights of children born of surrogacy, their surrogate mothers and intended parents. Each state and territory has its own laws about surrogacy arrangements and the website will direct users to relevant laws in each jurisdiction.
The website provides an overview of domestic surrogacy, surrogacy overseas, recognition of parentage in Australia, ethical guidelines on the use of assisted reproductive technology and human rights and surrogacy concerns.
The Surrogacy in Australia website provides important and reliable information for anyone contemplating surrogacy arrangements in Australia. I encourage all Australians considering surrogacy to visit the website and to seek professional assistance.
