MEDIA RELEASE
FUNDING TO ENHANCE SOCIAL COHESION IN NORTH MELBOURNE

Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus QC today announced that North Melbourne Football Club would receive $50,000 to support social cohesion in North Melbourne through education, sport, recreation, job and skills training.

Mr Dreyfus was joined by Sudanese-born player Majak Daw for the announcement of continued Federal Government funding of the Huddle, which fosters social cohesion through sport and recreation, while visiting North Melbourne Football Club today.

Mr Dreyfus said the $50,000 grant, under the Federal Governments Diversity and Social Cohesion Program, would remove the physical and cultural barriers preventing young people, particularly from African backgrounds, from participating in sporting clubs and recreational facilities in and around North Melbourne.

We all know sport is a powerful unifier in our diverse communities, and this funding will continue to support the innovative work being done at the Huddle, Mr Dreyfus said.

The Huddle programs increase opportunities for participation for newly arrived and migrant youth and raise cross-cultural awareness to enable organisations to provide more sporting opportunities for people in our community.

The North Melbourne Football Clubs Huddle is one of more than 60 successful projects to be funded under the 2013-14 Diversity and Social Cohesion Program which began providing $2.775 million in grants from July 1.
