Dutton sides with Hanson to oppose family law reforms
Peter Dutton's Liberal and Nationals MPs have today voted against the Albanese Government’s legislation to make the family court system safer for families and children.
In voting against the Family Law Amendment Bill 2023 Mr Dutton's MPs have joined Pauline Hanson in opposing legislation backed by family law experts and women’s groups.
As more than two dozen inquiries have now shown, the current parenting framework in the Family Law Act is complex and confusing and urgent reform is needed. It contains provisions which are misunderstood and, in some cases, have led to unsafe parenting arrangements.
Most separations do not end up in the court system, but for those that do the experience can be more traumatic than it needs to be and this has a significant impact on children.
The Government’s legislation will see more family law matters resolved quickly and inexpensively without compromising the safety of family members.
The Bill recognises the importance of a child having a relationship with both of their parents which will ensure the court continues to take this into account when making parenting orders.
This bill has already been subject to significant scrutiny, with an exposure draft process completed in February this year. The Opposition had the chance to refer the bill to an inquiry in March and failed to do so.
Peter Dutton and Michaelia Cash need to explain why the Coalition voted against this important and necessary Bill which will better assist Australian families in the family law system and ensure the best interests of children are paramount.
