BROAD AGREEMENT ON MARRIAGE AMENDMENTS NEEDED

Labor's Mark Dreyfus and Terri Butler have called on a Senate Select Committee to reach agreement on the terms of a bill for marriage equality, in a submission made this morning.

Today marks the close of submissions to the Senate Select Committee established to inquire into the Turnbull Governments Exposure Draft of the Marriage Amendment (Same-Sex Marriage) Bill.

"This inquiry provides an opportunity for Senators to bridge party divides and find a way to prepare a marriage amendment bill that would have broad support across the parliament," Mark Dreyfus said.

"The select committee is a majority government committee with opposition and cross-bench representation," he said.

"That provides an opportunity for Senators to work together to recommend how a marriage amendment bill could remove discrimination while also protecting religious freedoms," he said.

" Labor also welcomes the fact that States and Territories are making submissions to the select committee," he said.

"Those submissions, along with the many submissions coming from faith leaders, senior people in business, and the community generally, show the breadth of support nationally for finding a way to make marriage equality a reality while protecting religious freedoms," Terri Butler said.
