ATTORNEY-GENERAL INSPECTS AUSTRALIAN FEDERAL POLICE HEADQUARTERS IN PERTH
Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus QC visited the Australian Federal Police (AFP) headquarters in Perth today as part of the Gillard Government's community cabinet visit to Western Australia.
Mr Dreyfus toured the AFP offices, which include the Forensic and Data Centres laboratories and presented a certificate of appreciation to a long-serving AFP member for sustained and exemplary service in digital evidence management.
The AFP has maintained a presence in Western Australia since its inception in 1979 and continues to work closely with other Commonwealth and state agencies to prevent, disrupt and investigate criminal activity, said Mr Dreyfus.
The AFP members in Perth work closely with partner agencies to investigate offences such as serious and organised crime, high tech crime, counter terrorism and human trafficking.
Last week, a multi-agency investigation involving the AFP, West Australian Police and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship resulted in the first Commonwealth human trafficking charges being laid in Western Australia, said Mr Dreyfus.
This investigation is an example of collaborative work between agencies with a successful result.
I thank the AFP for the opportunity to see its facilities in Perth and to meet some of its members.
There are currently more than 270 AFP employees in Western Australia, located in Perth headquarters, Perth Airport and protection stations in Geraldton and Exmouth.
