Mark Dreyfus, Federal Member for Isaacs will host former Chief Scientist of Australia Ian Chubb at a community forum this month to discuss the impact of the Turnbull governments cuts to the CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research Centre in Aspendale and to highlight the importance of the climate change research it conducts.
Joining Mr Dreyfus and Mr Chubb will be internationally recognised climate scientist Professor Will Steffen, Labor Shadow Minister for Innovation and Industry Senator Kim Carr, and leading scientists from CSIROs Aspendale Centre.
Malcolm Turnbulls cuts to the CSIRO have made international news and have been widely condemned by scientists and researchers in Australia and overseas.
I am holding this forum to give the community a chance to hear why these cuts are so damaging to Australian science, to local jobs and to Australian innovation, Mr Dreyfus said.
Malcolm Turnbull loves to talk about innovation, but his actions speak louder than his words and cutting hundreds of climate research jobs shows exactly where Mr Turnbull stands when it comes to science and innovation.
I encourage all local residents as well as secondary school students to come to this forum to hear from some of Australias most accomplished scientists and understand more about the importance of climate change research.
These cuts to the CSIRO are particularly focussed on our community, with up to 100 jobs expected to be lost at the Marine and Atmospheric Research Centre in Aspendale.
It is a disgrace and a tragedy that a government can be so short-sighted as to cut jobs from Australian innovation the way Malcolm Turnbull has.
Science cuts are dumb cuts. Malcolm Turnbull should admit his mistake, restore the cut funding to the CSIRO and guarantee the jobs of the researchers at the Marine and Atmospheric Research Centre in Aspendale, Mr Dreyfus said.

Professor Ian Chubb is the former Chief Scientist of Australia. He was the Vice-Chancellor of the Australian National University from 2001 to 2011, the ACT Australian of the Year in 2011 and has over three decades of experience in tertiary education and research.
Professor Will Steffen is a climate change expert and researcher at the Australian National University, Canberra. He was on the panel of experts supporting the Multi-Party Climate Change Committee, has served as the Science Adviser to the Australian Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, and was chair of the Antarctic Science Advisory Committee.
Senator Kim Carr is the Shadow Minister for Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Industry, as well as the Shadow Minister Assisting the Leader for Science.He is a longstanding supporter of Australia research and innovation and is fighting Malcolm Turnbulls cuts to Australian science.
