Federal Member for Isaacs Mark Dreyfus today called on the Abbott Government to implement a regional jobs plan for South-East Melbourne, after the latest figures from the Bureau of Statistics showed that unemployment in South-East Melbourne has reached 8.1 per cent.
For 17 months now, the Abbott Government has sat on its hands as jobs in our community have disappeared, Mr Dreyfus said.
Tony Abbott has done nothing to stimulate employment in our region. Worse than that, unemployment has risen because of the Governments arrogant approach to manufacturing jobs in Australia.
Tony Abbotts refusal to engage with the challenges facing Australian workers is seeing more and more local residents lining up in the dole queue. I call on Tony Abbott to immediately step up and implement a regional jobs plan for South-East Melbourne, Mr Dreyfus said.
According to figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, unemployment in Melbournes South-East reached 8.1 per cent in January 2015. This compares to 6.1 per cent in September 2013, when Labor was last in Government.
