Federal Member for Isaacs, Mark Dreyfus today joined Judy White, Principal at Yarrabah State School, Aspendale, to discuss the National Plan for School Improvement.
Mr Dreyfus said the Federal Labor Government is committed to ensuring every child has access to a great education.
"Our plan is about making sure every student, in every classroom, has what they need to achieve their potential and the importance of this goal is clearly evident here at Yarrabah School," said Mr Dreyfus.
"Today's visit to Yarrabah is a great opportunity to learn more about the National Plan for School Improvement and discuss the future of education, both locally and nationally. By working together with our Principals, our teachers and parents, we can deliver extra support for children who need it most."
Principal Judy White said the implementation of the Gonski Review will provide the much needed funding for resources schools have been crying out for over a long period of time.
"Equity funding should enable all schools to invest in quality staff and infrastructure to support basic education and new innovations that will provide all students, in generations to come, with the finest of learning opportunities. These are exciting educational times for our students and those who work across all sectors of education," said Ms White.
For the first time, funding for every school in Australia will be calculated based on the needs of every student, in every classroom.
Funding will be calculated on a benchmark amount per student with six loadings as recommended by the panel.
The six loadings are:
- Low SES
- Kids with a disability
- Indigenous students
- Size of the school
- Rural and remote students
- Kids with poor English skills.
"This is good news for parents because it means no matter what school they choose, they know it will have the resources to support great teachers who can give their child the attention and support they need."
"Under the proposed model every school in Kingston - government, Catholic and independent - would be funded under the same system. It would be fair, transparent and give all schools long-term certainty about their future funding levels."
"Feedback from parents, teachers, principals and the community is important and we will be holding community forums over the next few months to talk more about our plan for better schools," said Mr Dreyfus.
