Sign Up to Say Yes to Better Schools in Isaacs - Mark Dreyfus QC MP

Attorney-General and Federal Member for Isaacs Mark Dreyfus QC MP today called on Victorian Liberal Premier Dennis Napthine to put local students first and sign up to Labor's plan for better schools.

Attorney-General and Federal Member for Isaacs Mark Dreyfus QC MP today called on Victorian Liberal Premier Dennis Napthine to put local students first and sign up to Labor's plan for better schools.

Federal Labor's plan follows the most comprehensive review of education in 40 years, which found that the current system, introduced by the Howard Government, needs an overhaul.

Mr Dreyfus said that every child in Isaacs deserved to receive a world class education and called on State Liberal MPs to lobby the Premier.

"State Liberal MPs Donna Bauer, Lorraine Wreford and Inga Peulich have been silent on their Government's savage cuts to TAFE and the effect this will have on their communities. I hope they will start to put the education of our children first and accept this historical Federal Government reform.

"The Victorian Liberal Government must do the right thing and sign up to Labor's plan for better schools so we can give every child the best possible start in life," said Mr Dreyfus.

"The Federal Labor Government's offer to Dennis Napthine represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to lift the resourcing and standards of every school and set our kids up for the future.

"The Federal Labor Government will invest $2 for every dollar the Victorian Government invests.

"Tony Abbott and Dennis Napthine need to follow New South Wales Premier Barry O'Farrell's lead and support Labor's plan for better schools.

"If Dennis Napthine gets on board, schools in Victoria will benefit from around an additional $4 billion in funding.

"The plan means more money:

To help improve reading and writing;
For specialist language teachers; and
To ensure schools have enough money for the teaching resources and modern equipment they need.

"The NSW Liberal State Government has already signed up because they recognise it is a fair deal and the best plan to support schools and students for generations to come."

Mr Dreyfus said local schools were already suffering from the Victorian Liberals savage cuts to education which has seen more than $555 million slashed from our education system.
