SAVE THE EDGY

Federal Member for Isaacs, Mark Dreyfus has called on Mentone residents to contact their local councillors to Save the Edgy.

An application to develop the Mentone Hotel site into 56 apartments and 12 townhouses, over four storeys, is about to go to the City of Kingston Planning Committee, Mr Dreyfus said.

This kind of development on Beach Road is completely out of character with the Beach Road environment and would require a planning scheme amendment to change the existing height limit.

I am strongly against this application.

The City of Kingston will soon vote on whether to allow this application to go to exhibition, essentially endorsing the application in principle and then asking for the publics opinion.

The vast majority of applications that go to exhibition are later approved by Council. The City of Kingston should stop this application in its tracks and insist that any development on the site of the Mentone Hotel remain at two storeys, as per the existing planning scheme.

It is clear that the Mentone community does not want this development. Council should listen to local residents and vote down this application, Mr Dreyfus said.
