Mark Dreyfus QC MP, Federal Member for Isaacs, today welcomed NBN Co's announcement that the National Broadband Network (NBN) fibre rollout will begin in Keysborough, with works scheduled to commence in the next twelve months.
Mr Dreyfus said NBN Co, the company established to construct and operate the NBN, had updated its 12-month national rollout plan to include an additional 191,000 premises in 31 sites across the country.
"This is exciting news for the 8,200 homes, businesses and schools in Keysborough which will have access to high-speed broadband," Mr Dreyfus said.
"The NBN is a substantial investment for Australia's future and I am pleased that Keysborough is one of the first suburbs in the south east of Melbourne to be connected to the NBN."
"This is exciting news for the City of Greater Dandenong, and makes the NBN a reality in our community, rolling out in Keysborough and right across Australia," Mr Dreyfus said.
"The NBN will drive innovation and productivity, which is very important in our local community, as fast and affordable broadband becomes increasingly essential for the long term prosperity of all Australians," Mr Dreyfus said.
The NBN will provide access to high-speed broadband to 100% of Australian premises. The Federal Labor Government will ensure that every home, school, hospital and business have access to high-speed broadband via the NBN, ensuring no one misses out. High-speed broadband will change the way students get information and communicate with each other, providing opportunities for collaborative learning between education institutions in Australia and overseas.
The NBN will also improve healthcare services by enabling video consultations from the home and from remote locations, providing real time diagnosis of tests and scans, and the high-speed secure transfer of medical imaging and patient records.
Work will commence in the Keysborough area towards the end of 2012.
