CSIRO CUTS HANG OVER TURNBULL
Federal Member for Isaacs, Mark Dreyfus today condemned the Turnbull Government over its cuts to the CSIRO, which has seen around 32 researchers and staff members at the CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research Centre in Aspendale made redundant.
The Liberal Party has finally done it. Their cuts to CSIRO have seen the climate research division gutted and some of Australia's finest researchers sacked. Malcolm Turnbull has guaranteed that he will be remembered as the Prime Minister that tried to decimate one of Australia's finest institutions, Mr Dreyfus said.
Worryingly, these job losses appear to have targeted CSIRO staff who spoke out against the governments cuts to CSIRO.
Mr Turnbull has a lot of explaining to do. He has cut off at the knees Australias climate research capability and had sacked many of Australias leading climate researchers.
Mr Turnbull needs to know that the CSIRO Research Centre in Aspendale is a centre of research and innovation, not a real estate opportunity. I call on Mr Turnbull to guarantee that staff members who spoke out against his cuts were not targeted for these redundancies, Mr Dreyfus said.
My deepest sympathies go out to the CSIRO staff who have been made redundant by these cuts.
The choice is clear this election. The Liberals will gut science and research funding and sack local workers, and Labor will support local workers and provide CSIRO with the funding that it deserves, Mr Dreyfus said.
