Federal Member for Isaacs, Mark Dreyfus QC MP, today encouraged local councils to apply for up to $150,000 available to help clean up and prevent graffiti.
Mr Dreyfus said the Federal Labor Government has allocated $3 million from the Proceeds of Crime Fund for the program.
"Graffiti is a crime and a blight on our local community, which risks undermining the many attractions that bring visitors to the City of Greater Dandenong and boosts the local economy," Mr Dreyfus said.
"I am pleased that the Federal Government is using the proceeds of crime to fund this important community initiative."
Mr Dreyfus said the City of Greater Dandenong was already playing an active role to eradicate graffiti from the community with a dedicated hotline to alert council to these acts of vandalism.
"I encourage councils like the City of Greater Dandenong to apply for funding and put forward their ideas to clean up and prevent graffiti."
Grants of $50,000 to $150,000 will be offered to local governments, partnering with community organisations, to invest in measures including:

Cleaning up graffiti;

Reducing graffiti, including improved lighting and CCT in graffiti hotspots;

Preventing graffiti, including through better education
Councils are able to apply for more than one grant as part of an anti-graffiti strategy.
"It is wilful damage to public and private property and that's a crime. This money will help local councils with great ideas to help clean it up and prevent it coming back."
Applications for funding close on 16 March.
