Family Law - it's matters.

The family law system is crucial to the wellbeing of many thousands of lives, families and especially young children. But the Morrison Government is doing everything it can to avoid taking action.

We know already that urgent action is needed – including more resources, increased funding for legal assistance and greater support for families.

I will continue to press the Morrison Government to take action, to listen to the experts and in particular the families who are desperate for a system that works.

In April of 2019, the Australian Law Reform Commission released its comprehensive report on the family law system including 60 recommendations - Family Law for the Future: An Inquiry into the Family Law System.

Those recommendations reflect the thousands of submissions in which people shared deeply personal and traumatic stories about their experiences. Reliving trauma to advocate for change is not easy but it is commendable and should produce timely reform when people need it the most.

Families desperately want a family court system that works, and this expectation is not unreasonable – is it deservedly justified in view of the report’s findings, recommendations and depth of submissions.

The Morrison Government refuses to tell us what they plan to do and has not bothered to respond to the report's 60 recommendations. Despite this, thousands of families continue to be held up for years in the family court system which often comes at a great financial and emotional cost.

 This situation is unacceptable.

Time's up.
